Indusmin Limited Specifies Sweco Separators To Maintain Uniform, Top-Quality Products

Ceramics for screeners sifters separators
Indusmin Limited in Nephton, Ontario, is the world's largest producer of nepheline syenite for the ceramic industry. Lakefield brand of this alkaline aluminum silicate has long been accepted as a standard of quality.

Problem I:
Nepheline syenite was ground and sized with conventional screens. These screens passed oversize (+26 mesh) material through their slotted openings or worn cloths. Specifications called for 98% of the material through 30 mesh.

Solution I:
For several months a test program, on a pilot plant scale, was carried out using an 18 inch diameter Sweco Separator. Later, a 48 inch diameter Separator was used on a full scale test basis. It was found that this unit, equipped with a 26 mesh tensil bolting cloth, would screen up to 7 tons per hour and give a product within specifications. Six 48" diameter Sweco Separators were then purchased.

Results:
Since installation, the feed rate to each unit has averaged 4 tons per hour but each has a potential up to 7 tons per hour. Efficiency of the operation considering both undersize and oversize products has been within 98% accuracy. Screen cloth life has averaged 2270 hours representing a throughput of 8850 tons. The final product from the Sweco Separators has been consistently within specifications.

Comments:
Blinding of the screen cloth during continuous operation has been very slight and brushing of screens has not been necessary. The Production Department has been well satisfied with the Sweco Separators, particularly the low maintenance cost and ease of changing screen cloths.

Problem II:
Indusmin Limited also wished to screen the discharge from its dust collection system to remove coarse biotite and foreign material prior to retreatment. The unit selected would be required to treat 1 to 2 tons per hour and produce a material containing only 1 to 1.5% of 100 mesh.

Solution II:
A Sweco Separator, equipped with an 84 mesh tensil bolting cloth (opening .0084"), was installed. The unit has operated efficiently at the desired tonnage and produces a material within specifications. Screen cloth life has been exceptional. As a result, a duplicate unit was installed.
