Research Foundation Solves Laboratory Screening Problem Using Flexible 18" Sweco Separator

Ceramics for screeners sifters separators
Structural Clay Products Research Foundation in Geneva, Illinois, is an orgarization that performs research for the brick and structrual tile industries in the United States and Canada. The Foundation is constantly searching for new and better products for the building industry.

Problem:
In order to develop better clay products, the organization wished to experiment with screening of various types of raw materials including specially prepared dry clay and cement. This called for a unique type of screening and separation device that could handle small or large quantities for a batch process in a short period of time. Any screening unit must also be flexible so that a number of screening combinations would be possible. Portability was also an important factor in the selection of screening equipment.

Solution:
To meet screening equipment requirements, the laboratory installed an 18" diameter two-deck Sweco separator. Nine stainless steel screen cloths were also purchased, ranging from 8-100 mesh. Any two screen cloths can be employed on this separator to give three fractions of material.

Results:
From 2 to 200 lbs. of various types of material, including special clays, are now efficiently screened in a minimum amount of time. Screen cloths are easily changed for any combination required. The 18" diameter Sweco separator is comparatively lightweight and is designed so it can fit into a very limited space. No vibration is transmitted to base of separator - thus, no special attachment or bolting is required. This allows unit to be easily moved about in a laboratory or plant.

Comments:
The Foundation also reports that they are able to operate their Sweco separator as a three-deck unit, if desired. they simply put into place three screens and spacing frames and adjust motor weights to give the desired screening pattern.
