How Kaiser Aluminum Screens 8 Sizes of Coke In Their Laboratory Using Flexible SWECO Separator
Problem:
Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation of Chalmette, Louisiana, wished to separate petroleum coke into eight different size classifications. This would enable them to produce various trial batches of paste using different particle size combinations. Specifications called for larger quantities of the various sizes than could be handled by conventional laboratory apparatus. However, any screening equipment selected must be quiet, portable, easily fed and set up and small enough to fit into their laboratory space.
Solution:
To meet these specifications, Kaiser Aluminum is using an 18" diameter SWECO Separator and 4, 8, 14,28,48,100 and 200 mesh stainless steel screen cloths. As shown in Figure 1, a combination of 4, 8 and 14 mesh screen cloths is first used, which gives four sizes of coke. This stack of screen cloths is easily removed and the second set of screen cloths (28, 48, 100 and 200 mesh) is installed as pictured in Figure 2. All -14 material from the first screening operation is run through the second set of screens. The two runs produce the eight particles sizes needed.
Results:
The SWECO Separator met all the laboratory's requirements:
| 1. |
Coke particles are screened to eight dirrerent size specifications. |
| 2. |
Separator is flexible allowing easy change of screen cloth assemblies. |
| 3. |
Unit is portable and operates quietly. |
| 4. |
18" diameter model easily fits into limited space available. |
Comments:
Blinding of the screen cloth during continuous operation has been very slight and brushing of screens has not been necessary. The Production Department has been well satisfied with the Sweco Separators, particularly the low maintenance cast and ease of changing screen cloths.
