Robert A. Johnston Company Eliminates Filling Machine Jamming With Sweco Separator While Improving Quality of Instant Cocoa
Robert A. Johnston Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin manufactures a high quality instant cocoa product. They are constantly searching for new methods and techniques to improve their products and operations.
Problem:
The Johnston Company found that the lumps in their unscreened instant cocoa mix were causing filling machine jamming. This resulted in an expensive tie-up of equipment and lost production time. It was determined that a sanitary, dust-free screening operation was needed to solve this problem. However, any screening device employed would have to fit into a limited space between their mixer and bagging units.
Solution:
An 18" diameter Sweco Separator was installed. This unit was equipped with an 8 mesh market grade screen cloth (.0964 opening) and a metal dust cover. To conserve space, the Separator was suspended from a ceiling position. The cocoa mixture, weighing approximately 30 lbs. per cu. ft., is carried by a screw conveyor from the floor above to the Sweco Separator. The desired minus 8 mesh cocoa material passes through the screen cloth and discharges through an enlarged and extended spout into the filler hoppers. An automatic controlling device in the filler hopper regulates the operation of the screw conveyor to maintain a desired material level.
Results:
No filler machine jams have occurred since the Sweco Separator installation. With the new screening operation, a uniform, high-quality product - free from all lumps and foreign material is produced at a rate of 1,000 lbs. per hr. The Johnston Company further states that installation of the Sweco Separator has resulted in a clean, dust-free process.
Comments:
Ease of installation and the compact, dust-free design were major factors in their choice of a Sweco Separator. Characteristics of material being screened should result in exceptionally long screen life. The Separator has not required maintenance during the entire operating period.
