How Crown Zellerback Improved Product Quality And Eliminated Production Downtime Using Sweco Separators
Problem:
Crown Zellerbach Corporation of Antioch, California, produces high-quality paper and paper products. One of the important operations at this plant is the production of a starch slurry size. In the process, dry starch is metered into slurry tanks and is mixed with water before discharging into process tanks. Not all lumps in the slurry are dissolved during the mixing process. This caused costly production downtime to clean clogged pipes in the system.
The processing problem called for a screening device to effectively remove lumps from the starch slurry.
Solution:
To meet product quality control and process requirements, Crown Zellerbach installed 18" diameter Sweco separators. Each unit is equipped with a 42 mesh stainless steel screen cloth.
Results:
Since installing a Sweco unit under each slurry tank, the company reports that their starch slurry size is completely uniform and free of lumps. This material is now screened at production rates up to 600 GPH. The slurry has a solids content of 3 to 10% and a specific gravity of about 1.5. Viscosity in cleaning pipes and other process equipment has been eliminated.
Comments:
Crown Zellerbach has had production-size Sweco separators in operation at other divisions on varied applications for a number of years.
