Florence, Kentucky - Chicago-based Superior Graphite recently cut its silicon carbide reprocessing costs to virtually zero at its Hopkinsville, Kentucky Desulco/Purified Products Plant with the installation of a SWECO SentryScan Performance Monitoring System. SentryScan now alerts Superior Graphite production operators that a screen has failed, allowing them to quickly take steps to minimize the impact of a screen failure.
"The SWECO SentryScan helps us prevent coarse material from contaminating the finished product drums. Our operators now have an extra level of assurance that the screen is doing its job," states Mark Harrison, Superior Graphite's Silicon Carbide Production Manager.
Before installation of SWECO's SentryScan, the only indication of screen failure was when an operator found coarse material contaminating the finished product drums. If such contamination was found, the operator would have to replace the screen and then reprocess all material that had been produced since the last time the screen was inspected.
The SentryScan's patent-pending technology is based on the fact that wire screens are a natural barrier to the transmission of microwave energy. When a tear occurs in the screen, microwave signals pass through the tear to a receiver on the opposite side of the screen, triggering an alarm that alerts the operator. The screen failure is detected almost immediately, enabling prompt replacement of the screen. This means that only a minimal amount of material must be inspected for possible oversize contamination. Elimination of reprocessing saves Superior Graphite thousands of dollars a year.
With more than 60 years of separation technology experience, SWECO serves the pharmaceutical, chemical, food, minerals, paper, and many other industries with a complete line of separation, sizing and milling equipment.
